“Single Dose Packs” of Laundry Detergent Dangers

The American Association of Poison Control Centers and the experts at all 57 of America’s poison control centers have joined in one collective voice to sound the alarm about the dangers of “single dose packs” of liquid laundry detergent.

These small and highly concentrated packets of liquid laundry detergent are often ingested by children who incorrectly assume the colorful pouches to be food or candy. Such accidental consumption can result in serious harm causing hospitalization. Other children, attracted by the “squishy” feel of the pouches, have experienced severe eye irritation after they punctured the packets and had detergent splashed in their eyes.

Here are some examples of traumatic reactions caused by ingesting the highly concentrated liquid laundry detergents.

  •  Ten minutes after a 20-month-old swallowed a laundry detergent packet, the child developed
profuse vomiting, wheezing and gasping and then became unresponsive to even painful stimuli.

    •   A 15-month-old who bit into a pack and swallowed a mouthful had profuse vomiting and, after arrival at a hospital, had to be put on a ventilator for airway protection.
    •   A 17-month-old bit into a packet and then rapidly developed drowsiness, vomited, breathed the product into the lungs, and had to be put on a ventilator.

Note the sudden and violent bodily reaction caused by the detergents.

“The rapid onset of significant symptoms is pretty scary,” said Dr. Michael Beuhler, medical director of the Carolinas Poison Center. “Other laundry detergents cause only mild stomach upset or even no symptoms at all.
Although we aren’t certain what in the product is making the children sick, we urge all parents and caregivers to make sure laundry detergent packs are not accessible to young kids.”

If you suspect that a baby, toddler or child has ingested one of these “single dose” packets of laundry detergent you should immediately call 911 and  your local poison center at 1-800-222-1222. Additionally, bring along to the hospital any container, package, label or remnants of what was ingested.

To avoid such accidents the The American Association of Poison Control Centers recommends these safe laundry tips:

  • Always keep detergents locked up and out of the reach of children.
  • Follow the specific usage and disposal instructions on the label.

The best advice is to always keep children well supervised. The laundry room should be an off-limits area to small children.  Also, when visiting friends, family or leaving your child in the care of another parents should discuss securing the laundry room.  Both the appliances in laundry facilities and the associated cleaning products pose significant risk to children.

Ten Plus Best Baby Laundry Detergents

<img src="baby clothing.jpg" alt="baby clothing on clothes line">

Is a baby laundry detergent necessary? Yes. Your new baby’s skin is pure and delicate and deserves to have products that are especially formulated to protect his sensitive skin, such as an all natural baby detergent. Ideally, you should began to wash all of baby’s clothing, bedding, cloth diapers, towels, bibs, car seat and stroller covers, soft toys, and and even your clothing that baby will be snuggling against before baby is born.

Babies are sure cute, but they are messy little humans.  In the first few months, many parents report changing outfits 3-4 times a day. If you plan to use cloth diapers, you will go through an average of 9-12 a day, and require an ample clean supply at the ready. You will need plenty of baby detergent on hand.

A baby’s clothing should always be washed separate from other household laundry. Some laundry can harbor germs even after a thorough washing. A newborn baby’s immature immune system needs to be protected from bacteria, fungus and viruses .

Baby Safe Laundry Detergent Considerations

Avoid Synthetic Scents

Babies have a distinctive sweet smell all of their own. Any baby detergent that you use should ideally be unscented. And if it scented, it should contain only naturally occurring organic fragrance.  Manufactured scents contain chemicals that are known carcinogens. A 2010 study found highly toxic chemicals in scented laundry products, some of which were carcinogenic.

Remember that babies have a very acute sense of smell. Fresh from the protective womb, they feel all sensations very strongly. What may be a refreshing scent to you, even if natural, might be troubling to your baby.

Stay Clear of Harsh Ingredients

These should be avoided in baby detergents: Optical Brighteners,Quaternium-18,Sodium Laureth Sulfate,Sodium Laurel Sulfate,Formaldehyde, Bleach and Nonylphenol Ethoxylates. The Environmental Working Group cautions consumers to”Read labels carefully and pay special attention to warnings. Don’t buy any products labeled “poison,” “danger” or “fatal” if swallowed or inhaled.”

Unfortunately, a label isn’t enough to keep you safe. Currently, there are no laws mandating that detergent manufacturers list their entire ingredient list.

The advocacy group Women’s Voices For The Earth (MVE) commissioned independent lab testing that showed all is not as safe as seen.  Both standard Tide Detergent and Tide Free and Clear (fragrance free) were found by MVE to contain 1,4-Dioxane  (a carcinogen ) and Limonene an allergy trigger. Read their report, here. Other popular brand detergents, such as All Free and Clear laundry detergent, contain optical brighteners. Skin irritations have been connected to optical brighteners, as these chemicals leave a heavy residue on washed clothing. Cara Bondi a Research Chemist at Seventh Generation, has a enlightening visual demonstration about about optical brighteners, watch here. Clearly optical brighteners and other harsh ingredients prevent a health risk to the chemically sensitive and babies

The best advice is to go with a company that fully discloses it’s ingredients and is truly committed to safe, green and natural cleaning. Any company that upholds such values is more than willing to talk to consumers and disclose full information about their product. Parents need this assurance when deciding on a baby laundry detergent.

Stain Fighter Capacity

Moms need their babies too be cute, and their baby laundry detergent to be mighty. Baby laundry detergents need to be tough on the goo, grime and well… poo of babyhood. But contrary to common consumer belief, clean does not have to cost your baby his health. Natural cleaners can be very effective at fighting stains and odor removal.

Clean Rinsing

Babies skin is their largest organ. You want a baby laundry detergent that rinses away all detergent residue. Undetectable detergent residue on baby garments and other infant items, could contribute to allergies and other skin conditions. Residue allows dirt to quickly adhere to fabric. Leaving clothing questionably cleaned.

Iron Safely With The Oliso Smart Iron

Okay, so I have a crush on a small appliance.

My funny valentine is the Oliso TG1050 1600 Watts Smart Iron.   This iron puts the romance (well, we can pretend) back into ironing.

Award Winning, Brawn and Brains

Seriously, the entire line of Oliso Irons are truly stellar appliances noted for their smart designs which allow you to safely iron your laundry. They have received a bounty of accolades and awards. Most notably, they were the recipient of the The Home Safety Council’s Commendation Award for Product innovation. The council recognizes products that are innovated with a focus on consumer safety.  The Oliso Iron also was an Iparenting Media award winner in a nod that shows that families with children appreciate the safe laundry benefits.

Oliso Smart Irons feature a patent-protected technology known as iTouch. The inventors of this new technology realized that the standard iron needed to be reinvented with a revived focus on ease of use and most importantly, safety. One of the problems with traditional irons are their inherent instability. Their wobbliness can cause accidental burns to the user or the fabric being ironed. The product engineers at Oliso solved the traditional iron design flaws and designed an iron that has both brawn and brains. The ergonomically designed Oliso Smart Irons actually know when you are ready to start or end the ironing process.

They key to the Oliso Smart Iron ITouch technology is in the handle. When not in use, the handle activates the lowering of the scorchguards. The scorchguards lift (like a push-up) the iron away from the surface area of the fabric or ironing surface. Thus the iron can safely rest in a horizontal position vs the mandatory vertical position of other irons. Such freedom prevents accidental overheating of fabrics, burns to skin, repetitive hand motions and the annoying falling iron occurrence.

But how does it iron?

Fabulously! The grill plate allows for smooth gliding over fabrics. It affords a vigorous steam action. You can safely steam fabrics in either an upright or vertical position giving you the flexibility you need to achieve professional laundered results. A unique fill tray design prevents water from dripping onto fabrics.

Watch this sexy steamer in action: Oliso Smart Iron Demonstration

Safety Matters

So our Safe Laundry Tip, is that the Oliso Smart Iron will greatly reduce laundry room hazards via:

  1.  Reducing Painful Accidental Skin Burns
  2.  Preventing Household Fires With Automatic Timed Shut-off
  3.  Defending Your Fabrics From Ruin By Accidental Scorching
  4.  Averting Dangerous And Damaging Iron Falls

Excuse me, please, I have to get ready for my date now. Umm….I mean go iron my clothes.

Tips to Extend Clothing Life

From professional work attire to casual fare, we have a lot of money invested in our clothing.  Therefore, it makes both sense and cents to safely and efficiently launder our garments.  Dr. Elizabeth Easter, a University of Kentucky professor and textile consultant for General Electric Clothes Care offers these safe laundry tips:

 <img src="Lofti.jpg" alt="Lofti Laundry Pulley for drying laundry">

Line Drying vs. Clothes Dryer

Often, clothing is set out for line drying in the hopes that it will extend fabric life and avoid shrinkage. However, Dr. Easter states that this is a myth for most garments.  Shrinkage, occurs in the first few washes regardless of drying method. Care should be still be taken for delicates and sweaters that require manual reshaping. These items should be placed to line dry or put on a flat surface to dry as per the care label instructions.

Full Loads = Clean Loads

There still exists the consumer misperception, that very small loads equate to cleaner clothes. Actually, Dr. Easter states today’s washing machines are designed to effectively clean laundry at full capacity. Washing tiny loads, unnecessarily, results in higher energy and water bills. Full loads, however, should not be confused with over stuffing your washing machine.

Time Your Fabric Softener

A common laundry room mistake, is adding laundry detergent and fabric softener to the washing machine at the same time. Dr. Easter, remarks that this causes a chemical reaction and can inactivate the effectiveness of the products. Instead, fabric softener should only be added at the start if your washing  machine is equipped with an auto dispense feature.

Always, measure accurately per your laundry volume and degree of dirt.  Adding too much fabric softener or more laundry detergent than needed will result in over-sudsing and clothing that retains residue and feels rough.

Powder Detergent vs. Liquid Detergents

Liquid detergents are used by 75% of consumers to clean their laundry. Yet, powder detergents are more effective at removing heavy soils – such as dirt – from clothing. Oil stains, whether body based or cooking oils, obtain better cleansing results in liquid detergents.

Tips To Remove Makeup Stains On Laundry

ShopSmart Magazine, is here to help us ladies get rid of those pesky makeup stains in their May 2012 issue. “Something as small as a makeup stain can put a big dent in your day – and ruin your wardrobe!” said Lisa Lee Freeman, editor-in-chief of ShopSmart. “We went to the experts to learn all of the inside tricks to keep you looking sharp when you walk out the door and help your wardrobe last longer.”

Here are some of the fantastic makeup stain removal tips offered by the magazine:

Cover-Up Before You Dress-Up

Tying a nylon scarf, or putting a makeup mask, around your head before pulling a garment over your head will help avoid the transfer of makeup and hair product onto your clothing.

Foam is Your Friend

A foam sponge or even the foam tabs on dry cleaning hangers can assist in lifting foundation stains and deodorant marks from clothing. A bit of foam should be wrapped around the finger (or otherwise held) and gently brushed against the stain.

Really stubborn stains may require the assistance of diluted Dawn dishwasher liquid. The cleanser can be applied with a toothbrush and worked in with soft circular motions and then rinsed.

Do The Dab

Prior to treating foundations stains, any excess liquid should be blotted. Then, dip a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol and dab the stain mark from the inside of the garment. Repeat as necessary. If the garment can be washed it should be further treated with a stain removal product. If not washable, additional recovery can be conducted at the dry cleaners.

Ready, Set, Blow!

Powdered makeup products should never be treated with water as this will force the powders into the cloth. Instead, a quick puff of the blow dryer can be used to remove face powder, eye shadow and powdery foods. Any residual amount can be washed or dry cleaned.

The Infamous Lipstick Stain

Sprinkle baby powder over a lipstick stain to absorb oil. Then cover the mark with an alternate clean and dry cloth. Finally, run a warm  and dry iron across the alternate cloth. The mark should transfer from the garment to the alternate cloth.

Dastardly Deodorant Dilemmas

Nylon socks or pantyhose are your best defense in removing those irritating deodorant smears. Simply use these to rub the stains away.

ShopSmart Magazine was launched in 2006 by Consumer Reports. The magazine is published ten times a year.

Swedish Boy Gets Trapped in Washer

Earlier today, we posted a story about a 13 year old Canadian youngster who became entrapped in a washing machine. Now the news wires are reporting a similar story of a seven year old Swedish boy who also became stuck in the family washing machine.

According to The Local, the young boy was caught in the machine for several hours prior to being extricated by emergency workers. Rescuers had to carefully dismantle the machine and then needed to cut the washing machine drum in order to free the boy.

Luckily, the boy was not injured.

Children are both curious and fearless in their pursuit of adventure. These two accounts demonstrate that the washing machines and dryers are dangerous appliances to not only babies and toddlers but equally to older children.

Older children, unlike babies and toddlers, can be directly spoken to about the dangers of laundry room appliances. Children are taught at an early age that the stove is not a toy and that it is dangerous. Parents also need to instruct their children that the washing machine and dryer can also be perilous and are not playthings.

Teen Gets Trapped In Washing Machine

A 13 year old Canadian boy recently became entrapped in a top loading washing machine, after seeking out shelter in the appliance during an innocent game of Hide-and-Seek.

Prior to calling for emergency assistance, the boys grandmother tried to free him, to no avail, by adding liquid detergent to the washer.

According to CBC News, it took Calgary firefighters about 30 minutes to free the youngster and required the partial dis-assembly of the washing machine.

The boy was freed without injury.

This story illustrates that parents and other caregivers need to teach their children, from a young age, that the laundry room is off limits for playing. The incident also highlights, that the dangers are not just limited to babies and toddlers—even older children can become endangered by laundry room hazards.
